Preparing for the first assignment by Papafrezzo, © 2007-2014 by www.papafrezzo.com

"Deepsea Atlantic" pictured on Bjørnefjorden, Western Norway, from a ferry on the way from Halhjem to Våge. Våganipen, the 918 meter high mountain on Fusa and dark clouds form the back drop.

Odfjell’s new 6th generation deep water drilling rig is being prepared in the sheltered waters of the fjord for its first assignment on StatoilHydro’s Gullfaks field. This semi-submersible rig is specifically designed for ultra deepwater and harsh environments. The deck area of the rig is a gigantic 7.250 m2 (about the size of a football or soccer field), which qualifies for a world record. The design is GVA 7500, and the rig can operate in water depths between 70 and 3.000 meters. This makes it very flexible for operations both in very shallow as well as deep waters. Additionally, full winterization may be provided for improved working conditions in an arctic environment. The derrick (drilling tower) has 61 meter working height.

You can see the freefall lifeboats hanging. Recently, these boats were drastically improved and some spectacular tests were done. See here for a spectacular video on one of these boats being tested from a record height of 55 meters, where it plunged 11 meters deep into the sea before popping out of the water.

Best enjoyed large and on black.
